Introduction

As a DNP-prepared nurse, I have closely observed the mental health needs in the Houston, TX community and recognize the significance of addressing these challenges. Mental health issues have a profound impact on individuals, families, and the community as a whole. In this article, I will discuss two critical mental health needs/challenges/issues prevalent in the Houston community, highlighting their importance. Subsequently, I will propose two practice changes or interventions that align with the DNP competencies to address these mental health challenges.

Mental Health Needs in the Houston Community

Limited Access to Mental Health Services:
One of the primary mental health challenges in the Houston community is the limited access to mental health services, particularly for vulnerable populations such as low-income individuals, minorities, and those residing in underserved areas. Research indicates that there is a shortage of mental health professionals and facilities in many parts of the city, leading to long waiting times and inadequate care for those in need (Smith et al., 2017).

Stigma Surrounding Mental Health:
The second significant mental health challenge in Houston is the persistent stigma surrounding mental health issues. Despite efforts to promote mental health awareness, misconceptions and negative attitudes persist, discouraging individuals from seeking help when needed. Stigmatization can exacerbate mental health conditions, lead to social isolation, and impede access to proper care (Mittal et al., 2016).

Importance of Addressing Mental Health Needs

Addressing these mental health needs is of paramount importance for several reasons:

Public Health Impact:
Untreated mental health conditions can have severe consequences on public health. The community’s productivity and overall well-being are compromised when individuals struggle with mental health issues without adequate support. Addressing these challenges can contribute to improved overall community health and well-being.

Economic Burden:
Mental health challenges place a considerable economic burden on individuals, families, and the healthcare system. The costs associated with untreated mental health conditions, such as increased healthcare utilization and decreased work productivity, underscore the need for timely interventions.

Recommendations for Practice Changes

Establishing Telepsychiatry Services:
To address the limited access to mental health services, implementing telepsychiatry services would be an effective practice change. Telepsychiatry allows healthcare providers, including DNP-prepared nurses, to deliver mental health care remotely, bridging the gap between underserved communities and mental health specialists (Cummings et al., 2018). This intervention aligns with the AACN Essential IV, which emphasizes the use of technology and informatics in advanced nursing practice.

Mental Health Awareness Campaigns:
To combat the stigma surrounding mental health, initiating targeted mental health awareness campaigns is essential. As DNP-prepared nurses, we can collaborate with community organizations, schools, and local leaders to raise awareness about mental health, challenge stigmatizing beliefs, and encourage help-seeking behaviors (Lindsey et al., 2017). This practice change aligns with the AACN Essential IX, which emphasizes the role of the nurse as an advocate for social justice and health equity.

The mental health needs/challenges/issues in the Houston community demand urgent attention and intervention.
