Give a brief description on social injustices in the current world
Social injustice refers to the unequal distribution of resources, rights, and opportunities within a society. It can manifest in various forms, including discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and more. Unfortunately, social injustices continue to be a prevalent issue in the current world.
One major form of social injustice is racial discrimination. People of color continue to face discrimination in various institutions, including the criminal justice system, education, and the workplace. For example, a study by the Pew Research Center found that black Americans are nearly three times as likely as white Americans to be killed by police (Rizzo, 2020). Additionally, research has shown that black students are more likely to be suspended or expelled from school, and that black workers are more likely to be unemployed or underemployed (Henderson, 2020).
Gender inequality is another form of social injustice that is still prevalent in the current world. Women continue to face discrimination in the workplace, with the gender pay gap persisting in many countries. Additionally, women are underrepresented in leadership positions and in many fields, such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) (Blau & Kahn, 2017).
Another form of social injustice is discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face discrimination in various settings, including the workplace, housing, and healthcare (Human Rights Campaign, 2020). Additionally, laws and policies in many countries continue to discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals, with some countries even criminalizing same-sex relationships (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, 2020).
Social injustice also affects individuals based on their socioeconomic status. People living in poverty often lack access to basic needs, such as adequate housing, healthcare, and education (Alkire, 2002). Additionally, individuals living in poverty are more likely to experience discrimination and mistreatment by those in positions of power (Sen, 1999).
Social injustice continues to be a prevalent issue in the current world. It affects individuals based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and more. It is important to recognize and address these issues in order to create a more equitable and just society.
