Consider what you’ve learnt in this course. What future issues are expected to have an impact on public health? How do you think global health issues will affect your community? How will you put what you’ve learned in this course to use in your current practice?
It is difficult to predict specific future issues that will have an impact on public health, as the field is constantly evolving and new challenges emerge. However, some potential issues that may have a significant impact on public health in the future include the continued spread of communicable diseases, the growing threat of antibiotic resistance, and the potential impacts of climate change on health.

Global health issues are likely to affect all communities in some way, as the interconnectedness of our world means that the health of individuals and populations in one part of the world can have ripple effects on the health of people in other parts of the world. For example, the spread of a communicable disease in one country can quickly become a global health crisis if it is not effectively contained.

In terms of putting what I have learned in this course into practice, I would apply the principles and knowledge I have gained to my current work in public health. This could include using my understanding of environmental health to help develop policies and programs that protect the health of my community, or using my knowledge of communicable disease prevention and control to help mitigate the spread of infectious diseases.

Go online to the U.S. Census Bureau at www.census.gov. Obtain information about the demographic characteristics of the population for your county of residence. Once you are on the website, choose the link to “QuickFacts”, and from there you can choose state, county, and city data. You may have to look at county data if your city is not listed. There is also a tab where you can see U.S. comparable data, too.

Include information about age, income, housing, and education. Post a brief summary of the key demographic characteristics of the population in your county (do not copy and paste directly from the website) and apply these data to your community by answering the following questions:

How do the data from your county compare to the sets of data from the other counties posted by other students in your discussion group?
Based on the demographic data, what health needs might you anticipate for the population in your county?
