Due: Sun., Nov. 27, 2022 by 11:59 p.m. in FOL submission folder
Introduction
Your major project in PSYC-1105 is designed to deepen your understanding of a topic of your choice
in community psychology. In keeping with the universal design approach to education, you will have
two options for this assignment; this allows you to tailor your educational experience to more closely
meet your needs/interests.
Major Project Options
Choose one of the following two options for your assignment:
1. Assignment Option 1: Literature Review – you will conduct a literature review summarizing
three sources on a topic in community psychology.
2. Assignment Option 2: Community Issue/Resource Project – you will complete a research
project about a social/health issue in our community, and identify local resources that are
available to address this social issue.
Both of these projects require similar/comparable amounts of effort/work. There is no right/wrong
option. You are encouraged to read through the assignment descriptions below and choose the
option that feels most meaningful/interesting/manageable to you.
Submission Requirements & Due Date
• Students will submit their assignments electronically to the FOL submission folder.
• The submission folder will close at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022.

• Students can expect their assignments to be graded within two weeks of assignment
submission.
Late Assignments
Late assignments will not be accepted.
2
Major Project Option 1 – Literature Review
Major project option 1 is a literature review. If you choose option 1 you will locate, read, and
summarize three sources on a topic of your choice in community psychology.
A “literature review” is a paper that summarizes research/work on sources that have been written on
a specific topic. You do not need a “thesis” statement for this paper. See below for a list of possible
topics:
• Compassion/prosocial behaviour
• Burnout/compassion fatigue
• A specific stress management strategy (e.g. meditation, exercise, emotional regulation, etc.)
• Resilience/protective factors
• Social determinants of health
• Poverty (e.g. food bank use, cost of living/inflation, housing crisis, etc.)
• Homelessness (e.g. “hidden homelessness”, emergency shelter use, sleeping rough/tent
cities/encampments, etc.).
• Prevention programs
• Bullying/cyber-bullying
• A specific form of oppression/discrimination (e.g. sexism, ableism, racism, colourism,
homophobia, transphobia, ageism, religious discrimination, etc.)
• A specific type of addiction (e.g. addiction to opiates, alcohol, etc.)
• A specific mental illness (e.g. depression, anxiety, etc.)
• A specific type of crime (e.g. theft, vandalism, violence against women, etc.)
• A specific environmental issue (e.g. littering, global warming/climate change,
sustainable/renewable energy, recycling, etc.)
If there is a topic you would like to do for this project that you don’t see on this list, please
email Professor Rivard to double check that it’s okay.
3
Sources For Option 1
You will need exactly 3 sources for assignment option 1. These sources should be
reputable/reliable and pass the “CRAAP Test” for currency, relevance, authority, accuracy,
and purpose (https://library.csuchico.edu/sites/default/files/craap-test.pdf). Your sources may
include:
• Peer-reviewed academic research articles located through the Fanshawe library website.
• Reputable articles or books by recognized professionals in the field, trade associations, or
professional organizations.
• Online articles from respected news outlets, periodicals, newspapers, popular magazines.
If you are unsure whether a source is reliable or reputable, please contact Professor Rivard.
Assignment Instructions
Please follow the instructions below for this assignment:
• Introduction (1-2 paragraphs in length) – Describe/define your topic. Imagine that you are
discussing your topic with someone who has never heard of it before – how would you
explain it? What are its components, or associated issues?
• Summarize your Sources (aim for about 2-3 pages in length) – Provide a thorough
summary of your three sources. Each summary should be approximately 2-3 paragraphs in
length. What are the main points of these sources? Provide detailed information about the
content of each source. Be sure to cite your sources in APA style (see below and on FOL
for more instructions on APA style).
• Conclusion (1-2 paragraphs in length) – In your conclusion you will take a “big picture” look
at the three sources; you should analyze the sources in a way that allows you to integrate
their main points. Do any of the sources make a particularly noteworthy contribution? Are
there any comparisons/similarities, contrasts/differences? Are there any common themes
among the three sources? What do these sources say about the “general state” of your topic?
Your assignment should be approximately 4-5 double-spaced pages. The assignment should
be typed on a computer (Fanshawe students are eligible for a free copy of MS Office).
APA Instructions
You are required to use in-text citations and include a references section in American
Psychological Association (APA) style (an APA lesson is posted on FOL).
• When referring to information from another source through paraphrasing or quoting, you
are required to put an in-text citation to indicate which source that information came from.
• Paraphrasing is preferable for this assignment. Paraphrasing means putting the
information from another source into your own words.
• IMPORTANT – you still need to include in-text citations when paraphrasing.
• Quotations are permitted if absolutely necessary (i.e. if the meaning of the text would change
significantly if you re-worded it).
• At the end of your assignment you are required to include a references section in APA
style of the three sources that you consulted for the assignment (the references section
does not count towards your assignment page count).
• Failure to follow these instructions could result in a plagiarism offense. See below for more
information about how to use the originality report function on FOL.

Major Project Option 2 – Community Issue/Resource Project
There are many social issues that affect our local community here in London, Ontario. For
assignment option 2 you will look into a real social/health issue in our community, and identify
resources that are available to address this issue. Your job is to choose one specific issue
(many of which are listed on p. 2 of this assignment under the topics for assignment option 1).
Your project will identify current trends, statistics, prevalence rates, etc., as well as 2 or 3
community resources/agencies/organizations, etc. that are working to address this social issue.
Sources For Option 2
You will need to locate 3-5 reputable sources for assignment option 2. These sources should be
reliable and pass the “CRAAP Test” for currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and
purpose (https://library.csuchico.edu/sites/default/files/craap-test.pdf). Your sources will probably
be online articles from local news outlets, periodicals, newspapers, etc. (if you are unsure
whether a source is reliable or reputable, please contact Professor Rivard).
Assignment Instructions
Please follow the instructions below for this assignment:
• Introduction (approximately 1-2 paragraphs in length) – Describe the community/social
issue. Imagine that you are discussing this issue with someone who has never heard of it
before – how would you describe/explain it?
• Community context/background information (aim for about 2 double-spaced pages in
length) – Provide relevant background information about this social issue. Describe how this
social issue is affecting our community. Have any significant incidents related to this social
issue occurred in our community? Is there anything about the local context in London, Ontario
that has made this issue easier/more difficult to address? This section should include
statistics and information about the prevalence of this social issue; i.e., how much/often did
this social issue occur in our community between a specific calendar year? Has it
increased/decreased (i.e. improved/worsened) over the past few years/decades? Etc. Be
sure to cite your sources in APA style (see page 3 and APA lesson on FOL for more
instructions)
• Community resources (aim for about 2 double-spaced pages in length) – provide
detailed information about 2 or 3 community resources that currently operate within London,
Ontario that are working to address this social issue (e.g. local organizations, agencies,
services, networks, online resources, etc.). Provide information about each resources’
background and history; why/how/when was each resource developed? Describe the
operations of this organization – what does it do to address this social issue? How does this
organization help people in our community who are affected by this social issue? If available,
include how this organization is funded (e.g. donations, tax-dollars, grants, etc.). Provide the
organization’s contact information/website.
Your assignment should be approximately 4-5 double-spaced pages. The assignment should
be typed on a computer (Fanshawe students are eligible for a free copy of MS Office).
APA Instructions
• See APA lesson on FOL & page 3 of this document for more information about APA style.

Academic Integrity – Using the FOL Originality Report to Prevent Plagiarism
In keeping with Fanshawe College’s Academic Integrity Policy, you are expected to write this
assignment in your own words. Even when you are paraphrasing from another source you still
need to provide in-text citations in APA style, which gives credit to the sources you are using in
your assignment. As a way of ensuring academic integrity and preventing plagiarism, your
assignments will be provided with an “originality report”:
• When you upload your assignment to the FOL submission folder, FOL will automatically
check your assignment for “unoriginal” content.
• FOL will give you an originality report by using a service provided by Turnitin.com. This
service compares your assignment with material on the Internet, as well as other
assignments that have been previously uploaded to FOL and Turnitin.com.
• You do not have to go to Turnitin.com to create your originality report – it’s embedded in the
FOL submission folder.
• About 15-20 minutes after you upload your assignment, FOL will provide you with an
“originality report” on your assignment – this will show up in the form of a small box and
percentage near your assignment file.
• The percentage represents the amount of “unoriginal” material that Turnitin.com has found
in your assignment.
• To view your originality report, click on the little box that looks like one of the following:
• You are required to review the originality check report to ensure that your assignment
does not contain any plagiarized/improperly cited material. Any unoriginal material will
be highlighted.
• It is normal for your originality report to come back with some amount of unoriginal material.
For example, it will likely pick up on your references and any key terms you are using, etc. If
you are confident that you have cited your sources correctly, you do not need to revise your
assignment.
• IMPORTANT – If your originality report shows that entire sentences and/or paragraphs are
highlighted (that aren’t quotations), you need to revise your assignment and re-submit it
because you did not paraphrase carefully enough.
• There is no limit to how many times you can revise and re-submit your assignment (as long
as it is submitted before the due date of the assignment).
• Professor Rivard will only grade the most recent submission.
Academic Integrity
In accordance with Fanshawe College’s academic integrity policy, students are
expected to write the assignment in their own words, complete their work individually,
and cite all sources according to APA style with in-text citations AND a references
section. The originality report function will be turned on for this assignment.
