Causes involving modern cultural controversies
Modern cultural controversies are cultural disputes and conflicts that occur today as a result of cultural differences. Cultural clashes are not new in society; they have existed since the time of our forefathers. The only difference between today’s modern cultural controversies and previous traditional cultural conflicts is that the latter have been influenced by Western influences. In the past, culture was highly valued in traditional societies. Cultural practices were held in high regard and adoration by their respective communities (Clark, 2014). Everything changed, however, with the introduction of modern culture. In today’s societies, culture is no longer valuable. Today, culture has evolved into a way of life. Several factors have influenced contemporary cultural controversies. Religion, technology, sexuality, and law and order are some of these elements.
One source of modern cultural controversies is religion. There are numerous religions in today’s societies, each with its own set of cultural practices. As a result, all religions continue to compete for supremacy. Every religion desires to be superior to others. Religion has had a significant impact on the evolution of cultural controversies in today’s societies. Take, for example, the Islamic and Christian religions. These two religions have always had sharp disagreements and misunderstandings. Each of these two religions has its own book and its own God. This is clear from the titles of their books and God. Muslims refer to their God as Allah, whereas Christians refer to God. The Quran is the book used by Muslims for worship, while the Bible is used by Christians. The differences between these two religions, Islam and Christianity, have sparked heated debate around the world. The controversies have even sparked religious wars in which Muslims have vowed to kill all non-Muslims. We have seen terrorism carried out by Muslims as a result of their faith. The primary agenda of Muslim terrorists is religion. They claim that they intend to convert the entire world to Islam. Muslims believe that their religion, Islam, is more powerful and superior to all other religions in the world. Religion was extremely sacred in traditional society (Scruton, 2013). Religion was once used as both a deterrent against enemies and a source of peace. People would go to the temple to seek God’s peace, which they would receive. Religion is being abused in today’s modern society. To begin with, terrorist organizations use religion to commit heinous crimes. There are numerous terrorist organizations throughout the world, the majority of which are influenced by Islam (Raffe, 2012). Among these terrorist organizations are Al-Qaeda, Al-Shabab, Boko Haram, Isis, and the Taliban, among many others. These terrorist organizations use religion to stay strong and inspired as they carry out their heinous acts. They are able to recruit new members into their groups through their religion. Furthermore, today’s religion has been transformed into a money-making machine. Many churches today are founded with the intention of making money. There are many pastors in modern religion who have their own churches. These pastors’ main goal is to make money by deceiving innocent believers. Modern religion is teeming with evil. Many preachers today have evil powers that they use to deceive their congregations in order to gain more followers for their churches.
Technology is another source of modern cultural controversies. Everything in today’s societies has been influenced by technology. Many controversies are caused by technology in today’s modern society. Everything has become simpler thanks to technological advancements. Through technology, all cultural controversies can be easily managed and organized. For example, terrorists who use religion to commit crimes are able to operate anywhere in the world and remain effective due to advances in technology (Bhugra, Popelyuk & McMullen, 2010). They can manage and collaborate across all social networks. Technology is a good thing because it indicates progress. With the rapid proliferation of technological gadgets such as smart phones and tablets, many infants are becoming increasingly exposed to technology. According to research, infants who are exposed to technology at a young age are more active in terms of cognitive abilities. An infant who learns about technology performs well in cognitive activities. Most technological devices are complicated, and an infant must first learn how to use one. This aids the infant’s cognitive development at a young age. However, technology can be detrimental to the social-emotional development of infants. Many infants are exposed to technology gadgets for extended periods of time, leaving them with little time to socialize with other children through play and other children’s activities. An infant may prefer to play a computer game rather than go out and play hide and seek with other children (Bullard, 2014). As a result, the infants are born with no social or emotional skills. Interaction with other children and even adults helps infants develop their social-emotional skills. Excessive technology exposure in infants only impedes their social-emotional development.
There are appropriate methods for using technology with young children. Technology should be used in ways that promote social interaction. Adult supervision is required for this. Secondly Learning should incorporate technology. Teachers should use technology in the classroom to teach, and students will learn that technology is only useful for learning. On the other hand, there are inappropriate ways of using technology in young children, such as purchasing technological gadgets for young children, which contributes significantly to an infant’s failure to learn social-emotional skills. Another inappropriate method is to use technology to distract young children from harmful activities. Everything in today’s societies has been influenced by technology. Religion, education, daily activities, and everything else in society are all dependent on technology (Gay, 2010). As a result, technology has altered the way people live in society, resulting in numerous cultural controversies. People no longer regard one another with the same regard. To freely interact and relate with others in today’s modern society, one must be technologically savvy.
Another source of modern cultural controversies is sexuality. In today’s society, sexuality has evolved. Sex and gender roles are changing rapidly in our societies today. Historically, sex and gender roles were defined very differently than they are today. Sex and gender roles have shifted in a variety of contexts, including the workplace, marriage, decision-making, and family, to name a few (Cairns, 2011).
Previously, each sex and gender had distinct roles. Males had distinct roles, while females had distinct roles as well. Each gender and sexuality had their own roles to play. Originally, only two genders were recognized: masculine and feminine. Males are represented by masculine, while females are represented by feminine. The sex of a person defined their gender. Other genders have emerged today, which are frequently referred to as the third gender. Gender and sex roles have shifted. Previously, only a man and a woman could have an intimate relationship, but this is no longer the case because other types of intimate relationships, such as homosexuals and heterosexuals, have emerged. For example, today there are reports of a man and another man having a sexual relationship (Lincoln, Lynham & Guba, 2011). The same is true for lesbians. This is a sex and gender roles inversion.
Marriage and workplace sex and gender roles have also changed. Originally, in a marriage, the woman was expected to stay at home and care for household affairs as well as raising children while the man went out to work. Women now work in the same places as men and no longer stay at home. Home affairs are now shared by both partners. Previously, only a man could be both the head of the family and the breadwinner. Many women today are breadwinners in their families. We also have contentious sexual relationships in today’s societies, such as homosexuality and lesbianism. We have seen the United States of America pass legislation allowing gays to marry freely. This is a conflict with Christianity, which opposes gay marriage. However, if a religion supports gay marriage, that religion is inappropriate. The traditional methods of maintaining law and order are no longer used in today’s society. People today go to court, and it is not always the case that those who are guilty are prosecuted (Szmidt, Normand, Burr, Hodgins & LaMotta, 2010). Because not everyone can afford a lawyer, the poor are often denied justice, while the wealthy continue to live their lives. As a result of the lack of justice, the rich are able to oppress the poor and get away with it. This results in acrimonious relationships between the rich and the poor.
Finally, culture is an important aspect of society because it defines one’s origin. It is our responsibility to safeguard and uphold our cultural norms. It is beneficial to live in a modern society; however, the government should ensure equality for all citizens, regardless of cultural beliefs and practices.
