Advocacy Project
1. Identify a vulnerable/marginalized group of interest and provide an in-depth cultural summary. The population must stem from one of the primary domains of culture (socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, religion/spirituality, and sexual orientation) and must be a group that counselors are likely to encounter in their practice. Extensive research on the group is necessary to provide a complex and integrated presentation. The group is already chosen and it is men and women who are incarcerated. -2. Identify critical issues and needs of the group. Look to the literature to support this. This piece of the assignment will synthesize the knowledge students gain about oppression, advocacy, and their relationship to the counseling profession. 3. Construct an Advocacy Plan: • Use the selected target site (prison system) • Collect information from the target site, which you will use to identify a systemic problem/oppression that prevents client, family success. • Develop a realistic advocacy plan based on your assessment of the systemic problem/ • oppression. • Provide a concise, bulleted handout representing your advocacy plan to your classmates and present your proposal for change/advocacy in class. Some examples of a “critical issue” could be the investigation and advocacy for: *Access for differently abled clients to mental health or educational services *Underrepresented students in gifted & talented programs *Access to mental health services for people who have served prison time.
7HDCO 563: Multicultural Awareness
Portfolio Assignment: Diversity & Advocacy Group Project- 75 pts.
This final presentation should last 30 – 40 minutes and will be presented in class. You will submit a powerpoint/prezi slideshow as well as a one-page handout, providing a clear concise summary of your targeted population and plan.
There are three critical pieces to this project, they are as follows:
1. Select a subculture/vulnerable/marginalized group of interest and provide an in-depth cultural summary. The population must be connected to a domain of culture (e.g. socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, religion/spirituality, and sexual orientation) and must be a group that counselors can be expected to encounter in their practice (so present in Montana, but not necessarily exclusive to the state). Background research on the group is necessary to provide a complex and integrated presentation. Depending on the group you may want to do some research on this population globally/nationally, before then focusing on background/data focused here in Montana/Gallatin County.
2. Identify critical issues and needs of the subculture group. Look to the literature to support this. This piece of the presentation will synthesize the knowledge students gain about oppression, advocacy and their relationship to the counseling profession.
3. Target a specific issue of this population that reflects a dynamic oppression such as lack of/limited access to mental health counseling, education, other services or opportunities that your group will focus your advocacy plan around.
This section will include pertinent information gained from the identified site of the advocacy project. Include information about contact interviews, individual roles/responsibilities, existing resources available for the multicultural group, etc.
Some examples of a “critical issue” could be:
• Investigation of and advocacy for access for differently-abled clients, students or citizens to mental health or educational services
• Investigation of and advocacy for underrepresented students in gifted and talented programs
• Investigation of and advocacy for access to mental health services for people who have committed felonies and served prison time.
The identified issue should be organized in the following manner:
• A clear statement of the problem/issue and the context of how it manifests in Gallatin County/Montana (supported by evidence, literature, interviews)
• A discussion of systemic, cultural attitudes toward the problem
• Construct and present a concrete Advocacy Plan that you could realistically put into action over the next year. In your plan please share the following information:
o Select and describe a school, institution, agency or community as a target site for addressing the issue.
o Collect information from the target site, which you will use to identify a systemic problem/oppression that prevents student, client, family success or well-being.
o Develop a realistic advocacy plan based on your assessment of the systemic problem/oppression. Remember- the plan must be appropriate to multicultural/marginalized population that it serves. Make solid connections here- what does the literature say? Current advocacy models? How does the research connect to what you are proposing?
o Identification of target for advocacy
o Specific plan, timeline, tactics, strategies, resources needed/available, etc.
o A discussion of possible positive outcomes
o Identify potential obstacles to your advocacy plan
