Flyer Assignment
Scenario
You are the landlord and maintenance person of a small apartment building with four one-bedroom units located close to a major college campus in Boston. College students are your chief tenants, and each usually stays one or two years. The basement of the building has laundry facilities and a bulletin board where you post permits and any other documents required by the city. You decide to install another bulletin board to post some safety information. This second bulletin board is the place you will post the flyer you create for this assignment.
The Assignment
First, select one of the topics/links on Mass.gov’s “Fire Safety for the Public” website:
https://www.mass.gov/lists/dfs-fire-education-handouts-and-flyers
Next, create an original black and white flyer in portrait format for the bulletin board in your laundry room. Your flyer should be one-sided and on standard letter paper (8.5” x 10”).
Selecting a Topic for Your Flyer
The website has all kinds of safety topics that may work for this assignment. Some pages have lots of information and actual flyers and brochures; other pages will have just information and links to other sites. Your job is to create an interesting and original flyer from, both information you gather, and models you study. I say “original” because I do not want you to simply copy or use the exact format or material from your research. I realize that certain information will need to be copied as is—this is to be expected in safety information. But I do expect, when possible, you will try to improve the information, its presentation, or any other aspect of the process and document for this assignment. In most circumstances, I also want you to use different artwork or visuals and different layouts if possible. In essence, your flyer should be your own, but may have influences from documents you study and use.
Other Requirements
• For your flyer follow the model on page 82 and carefully read the discussion on pages 83-86.
• Make sure to include all these elements discussed on page 83: Visual, Head, Subhead, Text, Foot.
• Your flyer should also contain the essential information (the five W’s of journalism) listed on page 85.
I also want you to include a copy of your finished flyer annotated labeling the six elements mentioned above. In other words, your second copy should show me that you know the elements named and have taken care to place them in the right place. Also, note the typeface, style, family, effects, size and category (serif or sans serif) of font you have used. You may also include any other relevant commentary on the second copy as long as it relates to your composing of the flyer, such as font selection, and any other writer’s craft decisions you have made.
Handing It In
The following documents are required (in this order) when you have completed your flyer:
1. A clean copy of your flyer.
2. An annotated copy of your flyer. (150 words)
3. A 150-word reflective memo to the professor summarizing the major decisions and concerns/approaches you used to craft your flyer from the source material. Also, include a copy or link to source material (flyer, brochure, webpage) you based your work on from the Mass.gov website. If you used more than one page to inform your work include those links as well.
