Figure 1: map showing the population density in china

Figure 1: map showing the population density in china using natural breaks classification method.

Figure 2: Map showing the population distribution in china by equal interval classification method.

Figure 3: Map showing the population distribution in china by quantiles classification method

As it can be seen from the maps, it can be seen that the population of China was concentrated on the Eastern part of the country in the year 2010 and the areas on the western and northern parts of the country had the least population density.
Comparison between the three methods.
1. Natural breaks classification
The map created using the natural breaks method shows a good visual display of all the present classes in the population density thus providing a clear picture of the population distribution. However it is a rather complex method but its advantage over other methods is that it minimizes the variance sum in each of the available classes.
2. Equal intervals classification
The population density map is easy to interpret since the width class of the population data being mapped is almost equal. However since the population density is not uniform, the sub ranges created produced a map whose visual display of the population density was not quite the best.
3. Quantiles method
This method is best used when the same number of units is available in each class. In order to come up with an equal number of enumeration areas, the areas with different values may be placed in the same class. This method is easy to understand but it can lead to erroneous conclusions.
The best method of classification among the three is the natural breaks method as it gives the best distribution.
