Unit 5 Paper – Terrorism in Iran
Terrorist event
On June 2017, Tehran, the capital of Iran experienced a series of 2 simultaneous terror attacks. These attacks were conducted by five Kurdish terrorists that belong to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) against the Mausoleum of Ruholah Khomeini and the Iranian parliament building in Tehran. The attack left seventeen civilians dead and forty-three injured (Knight, 2018). The shootings were the 1st terrorist attacks in Tehran in more than 10 years, and the 1st main terror attack in the nation since the Zahedan bombings that occurred in 2010.
Recommended plan of action to mitigate or prevent the threat
One of the recommendations is to introduce a terrorist screening center. It should have a watchlisting element, a sole database that has sensitive national and law enforcement information that concern the identities of those people who are known or sensibly suspected in engaging in terrorist activities. Another recommendation is to strengthen efforts aimed at discouraging all state support for terrorism. The main focus of this approach should be to decrease terrorists’ freedom of movement by encouraging Iran to cease admitting and tolerating the presence of terrorists within its borders (Bjorgo, 2013). It should thus bar terrorist groups from activities like recruiting, training, raising money, or hiding behind political asylum.
Plan for post-terrorism recovery
The post-terrorism recovery plan is as follows:
• Provision of the latest information regarding any medical needs that may arise and how to contact the designated beneficiaries
• Involvement of heavy law enforcement at the local and national level
• Provision of health and mental health resources in the affected areas
• Broad coverage of media regarding the terrorist events so as to keep the public informed about what is going on and the measures they can take to maintain safety in their areas (Gustin, 2017)
• Closure of schools and workplaces in the affected areas. Limiting domestic and international travel may also be necessary
• Evacuating families from the affected areas
