Deployment Models

Deployment Models
Building a home is a huge investment that takes commitment and is time-consuming. There are a lot of significant factors to take into account, such as choosing a builder, income, credit rating, current monthly expenses, down payment, and the interest rate. Some people choose a home based on geographical locations, schools, neighborhoods, etc., whereas others may buy based on what they can afford. Additionally, property taxes, insurance, home and termite inspections, closing costs, home security systems, and maintenance can drive up the cost of ownership, but the house is yours. You’ve got the control, but it comes with a hassle.
On the other hand, you can rent a home or apartment. Renting simplifies your decision-making. Renting eliminates maintenance fees, property taxes, and homeowners insurance since they are normally included in the rental fee. You can rent based on availability and can move when your lease is up. The disadvantage with renting is your selection is limited to availability, you may not be allowed to customize the home to your liking (i.e., painting, installing a home security system), and there are no guarantees that your lease will be renewed.
What does this analogy have to do with cloud computing and security? Building a home is similar to setting up an on-site data center. Owning your on-site data centers creates flexibility and customizability in areas, such as physical infrastructure, security, hardware, software, etc. However, like building a home, building an on-site data center is a major investment that requires continuous upkeep and management.
Instead of building your own on-site data center, you can rent computation power and storage from the cloud provider; this gives you flexibility to expand or reduce when necessary. There are no commitments. You pay for what you use when you use it. You can start and stop anytime.
Directions: There are several cloud deployment models, each targeting a specific set of customers. Using a credible source or research and compare and contrast key cloud deployment models.
In a one to two page Microsoft Word document, be sure to:
• Identify at least four key cloud deployment models.
• Locate and reference three or four (3 – 4) articles for each of the models you identified.
• Summarize your findings, addressing the following:
o Identify the security risks associated with each deployment model.
o Describe the differences between each deployment model in terms of hosting/infrastructure.
o Compare the cost of each deployment model.
o Examine each deployment model and identify which type of organization would benefit from each type of cloud.
• From an organizational security standpoint, justify why you would select one cloud model over another.
• Support your responses using information from the references you have found.
Deployment Models
Cloud deployment models entail the use of IaaS (Infrastructure as a service), PaaS (platform as a service) and SaaS (software as a service) to provide different data management and operations solutions to customers on demand. The building or renting requires different deployment models for the management of different operations. There are four cloud deployments (public, private, and hybrid and community cloud) that are different and thus used for a different purpose in the cloud deployment based on their differences and capabilities.
The public cloud is accessed by the general public and data is managed by third parties servers. The third-party holding the servers owns the server infrastructure that ensures a pool of resources is managed and administered (Goyal, 2014). The public cloud services are offered free of charge or payment is done through the payment of the internet connection as per the pay per use basis. Under the public cloud, the users have no information on where their data is stored or the [parties that have access to it. The public cloud is used in testing and development application and non-critical operations. The public cloud is used as it has easy access, flexible, cost-effective, scalability while it is avoided for its reduced privacy and security, reduced individual approach and compromised reliability.
Private cloud is accessed and used by specific companies for their internal or corporate uses. The management and storage of data are done within an organizational firewall thus increased and enhanced security. Organizations operating a private cloud can do it privately or delegate the duties to a third party (Wind, 2011). The private cloud has restricted access to uphold security operations. The public organization is used in organizations that safeguard their critical functions and operations such as financial institutions. The public cloud is chosen because it enables individual development, increased security and reliability to enhance individual development and it can be customized. On the other hand, the private cloud is avoided for its high costs experienced in terms of training staff, purchase of hardware and software.
The community cloud is run privately as a private cloud but it is shared by a set of users. The servers, in this case, are owned by the community that is often made up of different organizations with similar backgrounds of sharing resources and infrastructure in their operations (Patel, Patel and Singh, 2016). The organizations using community cloud have uniform performance requirements, privacy and security thus enabling the organization to achieve different business objectives. The cost of running a community cloud is relatively low as it is shared among different organizations. The community cloud is chosen for its reduced costs, efficient and effective data collaboration and sharing and effective security and privacy. The community cloud is avoided and discouraged due to the sharing of fixed bandwidth and storage capacity.
The hybrid cloud incorporates the best features of the three cloud deployment (public, community, and private clouds) thus enhancing an organization’s cloud operations (Sajid and Raza, 2013). This approach ensures that organizations adopting hybrid cloud are in a position to maximize the advantages of each and reduce challenges. The cost of a hybrid cloud is flexible to organizations using it. The hybrid is settled for due to its reasonable price, improved flexibility, and scalability and high levels of privacy and security. However, the hybrid becomes effective if the organizations using it can effectively separate non-sensitive and mission-critical data.
The choice of the cloud deployment to adopt in the building or renting of houses is dependent on their positive features over the others as well as the nature of the organizations. The cloud deployment model adopted must be in a position to meet the organization’s data management and storage demands.
