The case studies below provide you with an opportunity to critically analyze events that are taking place in real-life businesses. This helps to develop your critical thinking and research skills as you research each of these scenarios.
For this assignment, review four case studies—two from Chapter 1 and two from Chapter 2. Then, in an essay, evaluate the studies and respond to each of the questions below, using both critical thinking and theory as well as supporting documentation.

UPS created its information system with Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD) and Web-based Post-Sales Order Management System (OMS). That was a global action that used developed information technology. The new systems help in reducing transaction costs in the company. Building on its efficient order information management system, there is an optimal routing strategy made by UPS (Kenneth & Jane, 2020). It can also track shipments made according to customer demand. The information systems have ensured a quick delivery service of 2 days nationwide. As a result, the company has lower warehousing and inventory cost.
Some of the technologies used include DIADs, wired and wireless communication networks, storage technology for package delivery data, bar code scanning systems, desktop computers, and UPS’s central computer, which are as large mainframe computers. Telecommunication technologies transmit data through cellular phone networks and pagers. There is in-house software used for tracking packages, managing logistics, calculating fees, maintaining the accounts belonging to customers, and software access to the World Wide Web.
Unavailable automated package tracking system
If the automated package tracking system technology were not available, the UPS would try as hard as possible to provide the needed information to its clients but charge a higher fee. However, UPS would spend a lot of money and time labeling and scanning each item manually, entering data into the systems manually, and correcting errors since mistakes would be made. Automated package tracking systems help to avoid unnecessary mistakes and save time.
How globalization has “flattened” the world
Globalization has flattened the world because we are no longer limited to purchasing locally (Wade, 2018). We can shop from all over the world in the comfort of our homes and have it delivered to our doorsteps. Companies have been operating at any time from different geographic locations. People can work from anywhere around the world. The internet has emerged to be a full-blown international communication system that has helped reduce the costs of running and transacting business globally.

Information system has dramatically changed the NFL business since it supports all business strategies. The strategies supported include finance, marketing, human resource, and manufacturing, among others. In marketing, the system provides information to the market about the available features that can be used. For example, the tracking system used by NFL where people can access information about a particular player on the field, making the game more engaging. In the manufacturing section, the manufacturers are made more aware of how to make shoes or football depending on how fast a player runs or how much force is used to through the ball. The finance sector is supported in terms of who the best player is doing in the field. The team offers the best player money. The human resource function is supported in terms of a prospect. The systems play a significant role in improving operations and decision-making. That is because the data captured regarding each team and player helps players and team performance in generates give a visual look into the field and the movement of players, recording offenses and defenses to provide insight on the decision to be made to players at fault or those who need more practice and the ones that deserve an award.

Everyone’s input is impressive, and that is how brilliant ideas are generated. For example, Nike + The FuelBand partners with Apple products like the iPad and iPhone to track physical activities allowing users to set personal fitness goals.
A “smart” product is an object that processes data with various interactive functions. It is a combination of both software and physical interfaces. Its usage is interactive, and it needs the user to apply some cognitive work. For example, the Nike + Sport Watch GPS is a device that keeps a record of a person’s location, distance, pace, calories burned, laps taken, and heart rate. Therefore, if used for practice, the person can keep a record to enable them to know how and when to make improvements.
An increase in rivalry among firms by smart products often increases rivals by expanding opportunities for product differentiation. Product differentiation also creates a varying price range. The ability of a company or firm to set prices, be unique, and segment customers depend on how customers use those products. Smart products are used by almost everyone, from shoes, clothes, watches, and toothbrushes, to water bottles, among other items. Different firms are now ensuring that they are on top of the game every chance, therefore creating rivalry.

Ethics are principles of wrong and right that people with morals refer to when making choices that will influence their behavior. New technology trends have been the topic of discussion and seem to cause ethical dilemmas. They are a great invention to some people since car insurance companies can now combat fraud by using obtained information to reduce insurance scams in case of an accident. The data is used to decide accountability, whether the cause was car speed, braking action, seat belt usage, unconsciousness or drowsiness, or any other cause of alarm. On the negative side, some people see the introduction of these systems as bleach to privacy.

Big data analytics deployed collaboratively with data generated by motor vehicles can help to minimize cases of accents or car malfunctions. With the event data recorder (EDR), vehicles can acquire information desired by the owner or an interested party, for example, the insurance companies. Information regarding speed, braking, and other activities involving driving activities help singers oncoming or when to stop. Eyelid motion can be detected as well as hand motions.
