Creating Tension in Don’t Look Back Film

Creating Tension in Don’t Look Back Film
Scary movies are key in helping people within the society address and release anxiety and fear which reside within an individual’s conscious. Horror films help release negative and purge aggressive emotions within the society. They also allow individuals to offer societal criticism in a bid to create avenues in which people are able to criticize and offer their views on certain views important issue in the society. In the movie Don’t Look Back by Jeffrey Reddick released in 2020, Caitlin Kramer, is one of the several people who witness a tragic event where a man who had helped her is shortly and fatally assaulted. Other people who witness the events start dying and she is compelled to unearth if they were being followed or targeted by a killer or something more mysterious and evil. The killings are the premise from which the film creates an urgency for the characters to act on their intuition. Caitlin, who is recovering from a very traumatic past is again plunged into a very controversial scene when he witnesses the murder of a man, shortly after interacting with him. This leads her straight to her past and she becomes very traumatised and haunted by the events. The film applies the use of music, camera angles and dialogue to create perspective that exude tension and horror which are key in manifesting the narrative being explored in the film.
Action in acting is an important concept that helps impact characterization and character build up to fit the scene and their objective in general. Essentially as Chekhov describes; the actor’s most important need is to get transformed. The importance of a play is how the actor dramatizes themself and appropriates to their role. In the film, Caitlin slowly becomes aware of their role through the setting of the scene. Music and camera angles become key in creation of perspective and horror. The drastic change witnessed after Caitlin witnesses the murder is manifested by use of music. The directors immediately place more importance of diegetic sounds of the fight scene, where the man is killed by a mysterious person. The sound change call attention to the shift in activity one moment showing a pleasant interaction, shortly after the sound of punches and the scaffold become the basis of the horror that manifest.
Every scene in a film contains various forms of action that are meant to build a story to achieve its intentions on the audience. This action may be silent, physical, or mental. Depending on how good the actor is with their technique, actions will help them as they attains their objective in the most desirable manner. The action is in their voice, their physical movements, even in their intentional silence. Caitlin creates different feelings based on how she reacts with he body, facial expression and voice. When something strange happens she initially places more attention on the occurrence, before becoming scared. More importance is placed on her reaction and facial expression. She takes her time to observe and in the process becomes concerned, staring and eluding fear. Her facial expressions allow the audience to understand meaning and become more interested in In the script, we can see a lot of action and reaction.
Caitlin incorporates her action of clenching her stomach as if sick to help spell out the mood. The detective also pauses to look at his report. Here we identified his objectivity in his physical actions to put into context his role. In the final presentations, there was a scene that involved two girls. It is about two girls and a detective. The presentation starts in a slow tempo, in between the scenes there is a loud noise that keeps interrupting one girl’s confession. She gets frustrated with the noise increasing her tempo every time the noise comes up which clearly frustrates her and makes her forget. They employ improvisation by assuming an imaginary prison. She wishes they stopped torturing her. Then, the other girl is released into an imaginary cell where she is seen limping and confesses that she is in pain. The detective informs her that he will be back for her in a few minutes as he is going for dinner. He then locks the door to their enclosure and goes. This is when the two girls start conversing. It is revealed to the other girl who was getting tortured that her companion did not get tortured but decided to comply with their demand and made fake screams to manipulate the other one.
Emotions are used to characterize what is real and what is imagined. Imagined aspects that occur around her such as seeing the dead body of the victim, are captured in burst of emotional scenes and increased tempo and sound. In imagined scenes non-diegetic sounds also manifest to create intensity in the scene. The character seems deserted in the moment and in secluded moments. When they are within the company of others, reality sets in to create a sense that the characters have mental issues.
