What are some benefits and drawbacks of the expository

What are some benefits and drawbacks of the expository, guided inquiry, and free discovery teaching methodologies? Discuss.
Effective teaching methods often use a combination of more than one teaching method in order to provide the student with a well-rounded learning experience. Expository, Guided learning and Free discovery are such these methods. Individually these methods have benefits and drawbacks which when combined, the benefits are enhanced and the drawbacks are eliminated.
Expository teaching is also known as direct instruction. It occurs where an authority most cases a teacher presents information to the learners without open interaction between the teacher and the learners. It can take place in form of textbook reading, video watching or lecturing. One of the benefits of the expository method is that the teacher is in control of the lesson and therefore is able to control the timing and the content to be learnt. It is useful for learners who do best when given instructions. A disadvantage of the method is that it fails to give students the ability to take an active role in their learning. It can be enhanced when the teacher engages the children in a question and answer session (Miujis & Reynolds, 2017).
The guided learning method of teaching involves the expert or the teacher providing the student with sufficient material for the student to uncover the answers for themselves. The work of the instructor is to provide guidelines but the role of the student is to uncover information. One advantage of guided learning method is that it allows room for the students to fail and learn from their mistakes. It gives students the ability to discover things on their own. However, it may be challenging for some students to participate in the discussions and therefore may not be an effective form of learning for students not motivated to participate in the process.
The free discovery method is an inquiry based method of learning where the learner actively participates in the learning process by interacting with the environment through the exploration and manipulation of objects. It is advantageous as it allows students to use critical thinking skills in their learning process. It is mainly disadvantageous as it lacks sufficient structure that enables the learner remain on task (Miujis & Reynolds, 2017).
It is beneficial for all three teaching methods to be combined in order to ensure a balanced learning environment is cultivated.
