Task 1
You have already performed an experiment on liquid pressure in the laboratory. Learning through observation is an effective method in acquiring knowledge. Read the questions carefully under each heading and present your assignment as directed.
• Briefly give a write up of the experiment carried out in the laboratory. Your report should contain the Aim, Procedure and Result.
• Tabulate your reading neatly in a column with proper units. Do necessary calculations, if needed.
• Present a hand drawn graph showing the relationship of the gauge reading and actual pressure calculated. From the graph, predict the gauge reading for actual pressure if the mass of the load is 2400 g.
Task 2
This task is meant to determine the velocity of water coming out through a tap. You have already did an activity in the laboratory to determine the speed with with water flowing out from a tap.
• Use continuity equation of flow and determine the speed with which water flowed out of the tap.
• Present a brief procedure of your activity in your own words covering the aim procedure, observations made and the result obtained.
Task 3
This task has to be performed with necessary safety precautions.
• Identify any four electric appliances available to you. Carefully study the voltage specification tag on the appliance and record the operating voltage and the electric power consumption of the appliance. (The device must be disconnected from power supply while you study the rating tag.)
• Calculate the resistance of each appliance. Find out the supply voltage in Oman from reliable resources and give referencing in Harvard referencing system. Use the same value for your calculation.
• Assume that the first two and connected series and the last two again in series. If these series combination makes a parallel connection as shown in the figure below calculate the total resistance of the appliance and current passing through the network.
• Critically comment on the need of parallel domestic wiring system approximately in 300 words.
• Attach a print out of the picture of the voltage specification tag on the appliances you selected. The print out is preferably of postcard size 10.5cm × 14.8cm on normal A4 paper. Your answer may become invalid if this photo is missing in your report.
All your calculations should be presented clearly with necessary information and sub headings. A page containing just numbers will not be treated as your answer.
Task 4
This task is based on the combustion reaction of hydrocarbons.
Assume any one hydrocarbon from alkene family. You can choose any hydrocarbon that has carbon atoms ranging between 5 – 15 in its molecule.
• Write its balanced chemical equation for complete combustion reaction.
• If 100 gm of the substance you have selected is undergoing complete combustion how many grams of CO2 and H2O vapour will be produced.
Task 5
Request a copy of attendance sheet of your class from any teacher for any session you attended in the past in this semester.
Do the following activity based on data you can collect from the attendance sheet. Calculate probability of finding:
a) An Omani student attended in that particular session
b) A non- Omani student attended in the same session.
c) A Qatari student attended in the same learning session.
d) A female Omani student attended in the same class session.
The attendance sheet has to be attached with your report failing to which mark will not be awarded.
