The Cabotage Act of 2003 details the legal framework for espionage and espionage-related activities in Nigeria. It was conceived of in 2003 and passed into law in May of 2004, with two key goals in mind: i. To give native and future operators the ability to register and operate ships and to take part in the commercial transportation of goods and services.
ii. To keep the power of shipping within the Nigerian coastal and inland water vessels built within Nigeria, owned by Nigerians, and operated by Nigerians.
The law makes it illegal for any vessel that is not built, registered, and wholly owned and operated by citizens of Nigeria to participate in domestic or coastal shipping business within the coastal, territorial, and inland waters, including islands, that are within Nigeria’s economic zone. This prohibition applies to any vessel, regardless of where it was built.
Additionally, the cabotage law extends its authority to prohibit international maritime corporations from participating in towage and salvage services within Nigeria’s coastal seas. These activities are illegal under the cabotage law. On the other hand, these businesses are permitted to offer their assistance to any vessels, people, or aircraft that might be in danger while they are operating within Nigerian seas.
