Low Rate WPAN
The market for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) is becoming more popular as consumers rapidly gain interest. People are becoming more comfortable with wireless devices due to their compatibility with mobility. Low Rate WPAN (LR-WPAN), are becoming even more desirable as they enable devices within the range of 1m-100m to easily communicate via a virtual network (Hackmann, n.d). However, there are different LR-WPAN standards to accommodate various needs. They include Bluetooth standards, Zigbee and Infrared Data Association (IrDA). Each of these standards has weaknesses and strengths making them suitable for varying works. IrDA provides short-range, high-speed, point-to-point, and line-of-sight wireless data transfer allowing communication devices to interact via available protocols. The initial idea for IrDA was to do away with cable technology and provide a way for devices to successfully transfer signals when pointed at each other. Examples include remotes, keyboards, and printers. Bluetooth as a standard is the most popular as it is used in broad applications. It also aims to offer cable replacement, but there is no need for devices to be pointed at each other for signal transfer. It works through a protocol stack defining components on the Media Access Control (MAC) and Physical (PHY) layers. Zigbee is also known as the IEEE 802.15 Task Group 4, and it aimed to create a way for devices to communicate autonomously without a constant recharge. This standard was developed to standardize the MAC and PHY layers of Bluetooth and offer low-power consumption opportunities (Etutorials, 2006). It works on an unlicensed international frequency band targeting smart badges, sensors, remote controls, and home automation. Overall, all these standards aim to construct reliable links across low-power devices, hence offering a wireless technology shift.
