Cloud-based computing allows organizations to operate their data on remote servers. The issue of governance or control emerges when the data is moved to the remote resources. Organizations should protect their data on remote access platforms. Therefore the organization may introduce the measures of data protection but may not directly control. On the other hand, the growth of mobile phones and the adoption of wireless technologies has accelerated the use of mobile phones. The smartphones have been incorporated with the advanced programming interface (API) to include third party applications. Moreover, the ability of smartphones to access wireless networks and advanced features such as storage space and high processing speed, among others, make them suitable for use in the cloud computing environment. Therefore, discussing the issue of cloud-based computing and the benefits of cloud mobile computing helps in a better understanding of their operations.
Cloud-based computing governance or control involves compliance, which is the responsibility of the organization to operate by adhering to the regulations and the established laws (Cochran & Witman, 2011). The issues of compliance arise as a result of the impact of data locations on the ability to ensure compliance. For instance, the in-house data center allows the organizations to know in detail where data is stored and introduce the safeguards to protect the data in compliance with the regulations. However, in many cloud computing environment, data may be stored in the redundantly and in multiple locations (Prasad, Green & Heales, 2014). The details about the location of data may be unknown for the organizations and may vary over time or may not be disclosed to the consumer. In that case, organizations may not easily introduce safeguard measures and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory measures. The use of the external audits and security certification can help in solving the issue only to some extent. Therefore the issue of governance emerges on whether the organization can take control of cloud computing resources or not.
Cloud mobile computing has several benefits to an organization. Smartphones can connect to several resourceful could platform from any location through the use of wireless technologies. Mobile devices can off-load both data processing and storage to cloud platforms and save on in-device storage, CPU time as well as battery power (Guha, 2013). For instance, the iCloud in Apple devices has a cloud storage space for storing the customer’s photo, music, documents through the use of EC2 operated by Amazon. Additionally, mobile devices can help in boosting security on the cloud. The devices can be mirrored in the cloud to facilitate the checking for viruses, and the process can be performed more easily and quickly by parallel processing. Enhanced security is provided as compared to in-device low-end antivirus software.
In conclusion, the issue of cloud-based computing governance is based on the location of the resources and compliance with the regulations and laws of operation. The in-house data center is better managed as compared to data stored in multiple locations. The use of mobile computing has several benefits, which include the off-loading of the data storage and data processing to the cloud environment, thereby saving on CPU time, battery power, and in-device storage. The mobile devices can easily configure security issues and detect malicious programs.
