Introduction
Family assessment plays an important role in promoting the health of a patient. Family members also act as caregivers at home; hence it’s important to include them when administering care to the patient. This paper will offer a comparison between key ingredient selected and the one I have been using, discuss one element to add on my assessment, how the decisions of patients can impact the family, and advantage of CSNAT tool as compared to other tools.
The ingredient selected is a genogram. A genogram is an outline that illustrates the internal structure of the family (Leahey & Wright, 2009). In my nursing practice, the approach that I have been using did not entail taking data from the whole family. This is because of the numerous tasks that I have to attend my workplace. The use of a genogram is better as it helps to understand the religious background of the family. Unlike my past approach in family assessment, a genogram helps a nurse to critically think about the family as a whole.
From the video, I feel I should add the use of therapeutic conversations in my assessment. Therapeutic conversations are deliberative and purpose-driven conversations that a nurse can engage with the patients to improve their outcome. My family assessment did not include the therapeutic conversations as some family members were unresponsive to the questions. I have also learned that it can take a short period of time thus it’s convenient to use. A therapeutic conversation can take 15 minutes or less and its questions are mostly the defining element.
Healthcare policies require the healthcare practitioners to engage the patients while making a health-related decision. Some of these decisions may impact the patient’s family in different ways, a situation the healthcare provider need to consider. Healthcare decisions that impact the family include decisions that affect the family culture and beliefs, the financial status of the family or a decision that lead to complication of the health status of the patient. Healthcare provider should ensure both the patient and the family are in agreement before implementing a proposed decision.
The CSNAT tool can support the caregiver needs better as compared to other non-structured tools since it has a brief but in a comprehensive format enables the caregivers to quickly identify the domains that they are interested in and which they do require support. The tool also gives the caregivers a chance for discussion with the health practitioners (Sama et al, 2015). The tool contains about 14 broad topic areas which comprise the areas which the caregivers need support. The tool is also simple and short to use for both the practitioners and the caregivers.
Conclusion
The use of a CSNAT tool has proved to be effective in identifying areas that caregivers need help while taking care of the patient. Nurses and caregivers should always integrate the various strategies of family assessments. Family members should not be discriminated when it comes to the health of the patient.
