If the previous slide is correct, people who are not experiencing high levels of stress may be able to use drugs without becoming addicted and subsequently having the negative consequences of addiction.

• If stress is the cause of addiction, should we allow people who are relatively stress free to use recreational drugs without fear of punishment?

• Is addiction, and the negative consequences associated with it, the only reason we criminalize drugs?

Drug Addiction
Stress as the cause of addiction is only one causal factor hence the need for stress-free individuals to refrain from indulging. Addiction has no discrimination, and many reasons may lead people to get hooked. Research has shown that there are people who take “addictive” substances but do not get addicted (Hartney, 2019). However, there is no saying who can or cannot get addicted. What may start as a recreational stress-free habit may soon result in dependency. Furthermore, individuals who partake in drugs when they do not have stress may result in taking those same drugs when they experience stress later on. The notion that they did not get addicted when they were stress-free may guide them to use the drugs during stressful times, unaware of the changes in scenarios. As people look for ways to experience happiness, they need to remember that drugs change how the brain functions on matters of decision making and judgment. Too much intake may result in brain dependency behaviors that lead to more consumption.
Addiction and its negative consequences are not the only reasons why drugs are criminalized. Drugs bring about mental, health, ethical, and security concerns within a community. Before addiction, people tend to have challenges in decision making and self-control (Hartney, 2019). Drug use brings about a decline in safety within communities where drugs are sold since dangerous people are involved in the distribution. To curb such cases, law enforcement officers need to put in extra effort to combat crime. Such actions may drain a police department’s financial resources to keep drugs off the streets. Criminalization of drugs is rooted in many factors, not only addiction. Normalizing drug use means an increase in distribution and access. There is a need to consider future generations and create a drug-free environment for the children of today.
