The social media in focus is Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg was the one who developed it in the year 2004 while he was a student at Harvard University (Good, 2013). The Facebook idea came from Zukerberg’s period at Phillips Exeter Academy, which published a student directory year with photos of headshots of all faculty and students. In 2004, Mark started coding a new website referred to as Thefacebook. The purpose of Facebook is to make it easy for people to connect and share with friends and family online.
Role of Facebook in the development of self
Facebook plays a vital role in the development of self. As such, Facebook influences the formation of identity by permitting users to experiment with different behaviors and styles of interaction (Wood, Bukowski & Lis, 2016). By communicating with different people on this social media platform, an individual gets the chance to portray different personalities depending on who is they are interacting with. In the process, a person gets to discover who they really are and the personality that best describes them. Facebook also makes it possible for users to discover their interests (Zhao, Grasmuck & Martin, 2008). This is because people tend to connect more with people who have similar interests as them and even join groups that advance their interests. Facebook can also increase one’s self-esteem or decrease it. This is dependent on the comments that one gets from the posts they make. Positive comments tend to increase one’s self-esteem while negative comments decrease one’s sense of self worth.
The research has really been insightful. I have come to realize the great role that social media plays in our society. Therefore, in my opinion, Facebook shapes our day to day lives, and its effects on us as individuals should not be overlooked. The way we interact on this social media platform can either make us or break us.

Obviously, Facebook has served to increase communications between family and friends. Importantly, the social networking site has and continues to play a vital role in the development of self. For instance, Facebook makes it possible for people to experiment with different behaviors, discover their interests and even influences self-esteem.
