Nursing boards are vital in protecting public health by regulating the nursing practice. APRN nursing boards’ regulations differ by state. The differences vary from independent practice, collaborative practice, and restrictive measures. For instance, Delaware allows nurses to practice independently among other 23 states (Cook & Adler, 2021). However, Florida restricts nursing practice by requiring the healthcare workers to have a collaborative relationship with a physician.
In Delaware State, APRN practitioners have the liberty of independent practice. The board can give permission for independent practice or require registered nurses to collaborate with a physician in care delivery (Cook & Adler, 2021). The permission allows the practitioner to diagnose and prescribe treatment outside an established healthcare facility. Delaware is among the other 23 states that allow nurses to practice independently (Cook & Adler, 2021).
Comparatively, in Florida, NPs require a collaborative relationship with physicians to diagnose and prescribe treatment. The restrictive practice is according to the agreement and protocols of healthcare delivery in Florida (Neff et al., 2018). Newly certified NPs should have a written collaborative agreement protocol to diagnose and provide therapeutic and corrective treatment. Despite the collaborative relationship, NYS laws hold NPs responsible for the healthcare mistakes that can undermine the safety of a patient (Neff et al., 2018). In Florida, APRNs are allowed to practice independently in the delivery of primary care practice. NPs cannot prescribe controlled substances in Florida. APRNs may only prescribe within the established protocol.
The regulations impact nursing practice since they either give the liberty to practice without restrictions or undermine the scope of practice (Neff et al., 2018). Nursing intending to embrace independent practice can relocate to other states such as Delaware that uphold the liberty of nurses to practice independently.
