Patient Education Blog Entry #1 Directions
First, provide an overview of the physical changes that occur due to the aging process that many adults (65+ years) have difficulty accepting. People can have several emotional reactions to these changes, ranging from positive and accommodating, to denial, or fear. It is easy to see how some businesses could capitalize on these emotions with services ranging from cosmetic surgery, teeth whitening, veneers & implants, to products that claim to be wrinkle reducers, & skin toners, hair coloring, vitamins and herbs that claim to protect vision and other body functions, and products that purportedly tone face and neck muscles. Products that enhance memory and cognition may also be considered.
Find a product, treatment, or procedure online that claims to stop, slow, or reverse the physiological changes associated with the aging process for older adults (65+). Upload an image, video, or other ‘visual’ of it to your Blog. In the Blog, educate older adults on how to determine the validity of claims of this product. For example, does it really do what it says it will do? Are there any side effects or customer complaints about the product? How would a consumer know/find out these things? Educate the older adult blogger on the persuasive influence of testimonials v. research/science. How can they differentiate testimonials from research? Is the product subject to any kind of regulation in the United States? Provide evidence-based advice to your older-adult blog visitor regarding your support (or not) of the product. Discuss the nurses role in addressing the emotional response to certain products or services in a way that promotes the older adults’ overall health and well-being. Is the product regulated in the United States in any way? Give your older adult blog readers advice based on evidence about whether or not you like the product. Talk about how nurses can help older people deal with how they feel about certain products or services in a way that is good for their overall health and well-being.
