Please consider the functions of the heart and the vascular system as we studied it. I want you to diagram/illustrate/write out the pathway for a drop of blood in a pregnant female from the mother’s heart to the baby, back to the mother’s heart again. I know this may seem very challenging but give it some thought, look at an atlas, research it a little and give it your best!

Discussion Forum Week Eight:
We will conclude the circulatory system this week. I want you to stop a minute and think of the fears and concerns you might face as a new embalmer as it pertains to the the vascular system. What scares you or presents to you as a challenge being new at this. This week will be the last time we cover the circulatory system. I want you to take a moment to pause what you’re doing and think about some of the worries and concerns that you might have as a rookie embalmer in relation to the vascular system. What aspects of this new experience make you feel uncomfortable or confront you with a challenge? I know some of you have been in this field for awhile and may feel comfortable. But we all have challenges when it comes to embalming and I would like each of you to express what your concerns are as it relates to the blood vascular system.

NICOLE’S POST:

I am still fairly new to the embalming room, and the majority of the cases I have had are elderly. The concerns I have with someone of advanced age are the fragility of the vessels and blood clots. I have encountered one case where the internal jugular vein broke before I could tie it off. It made quite a mess, but luckily I was still able to get good drainage and did not run into any restrictive issues. One of my fears is running into a blockage and not getting a good buildup of pressure to distribute embalming fluids throughout the body without being able to restrict drainage. Another challenge I have encountered is finding a vein to inject when embalming an autopsy case. It is tough to find the arteries after they have been cut from the autopsy, and nerves can look very similar to arteries in shape and color. I had to cut a small piece of what I suspected to be an artery to see if it had a lumen or not, it can be time consuming. I imagine over time it will become easier to distinguish the nerves from the arteries.
