Assignment 1 Guidelines

For this assignment, you will be tasked to identify and critically discuss any issue of contemporary concern pertaining to crime, deviance, law, and the administration of criminal justice. Some examples may include, but not limited to, the death penalty, legalization of drugs, laws governing homosexuality, technology and crime, rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders, gang violence, juvenile crime, desistance, class and crime etc.

This research piece is not only confined to academic debates but it warrants a critical appraisal of crime, deviance, and criminal justice policy as set against a global context. Guidelines: The main point of this assignment is for you to present your topic of choice in a style similar to a research paper. This research paper isn’t just for academic debates; it should also be looked at in the context of crime, deviance, and criminal justice policy around the world. Guidelines: The main goal of this assignment is for you to talk about your chosen topic in a way that looks like a research paper. There’s a wide variety of topics to choose from and you are not limited to the Singapore context but because additional marks are awarded for presenting empirical data locally gathered, confining your research to the Singapore context is prudent.

When thinking of a topic, make sure you draw clear links to the study of crime and deviance. How is the phenomenon related to crime, deviance, law, and/or the criminal justice system? The research paper cannot only be a description of the phenomenon. Like any research paper, it has to have a clear outline, narrative, analysis, and argument that is to be presented. What is the argument you are trying to make? Why does it matter today especially in a global context? How is the issue perceived? What does the phenomenon tell us about crime, deviance, and/or criminal justice policies? How do you explain it using the theories from this module or with related criminological concepts of deviance? What have other scholars said about the chosen topic? You may use images, charts, statistics in the paper if it helps you in your analysis to substantiate your points. Possible Structure Introduction Literature Review Analysis/Discussion Conclusion Reference Introduction Provide a brief history and context of your selected topic/issue of investigation and why you have chosen the topic/issue i.e. its significance. Conclude the introduction with the main points and arguments you will be presenting. Literature Review The literature review cannot just be a summary or laundry list of the relevant literature pertaining to the topic.

Briefly show how you will engage with the literature, theories, and other interlocutors (if any) to make your case. Analysis/Discussion The section should consist the bulk of your presentation. It should discuss in relation to

your chosen topic/issue why and how this matters to the study of crime, deviance, and/or the criminal justice system; the employment of relevant concepts and theories to explain and give analysis on the phenomenon; primary and/or secondary data to bolster your points; criminological insights into the study of crime and deviance.
