Errors in Reasoning

Errors in Reasoning
The article in focus is titled “Screens in schools are a $60 billion hoax.” In his article, Kardaras (2016) tries to disprove technology as a beneficial evolution in education. According to him, technology in the classroom has proven to be detrimental to the education outcomes of children and their mental health. Such technology has led to increased depression, ADHD, anxiety, aggression, and psychosis (Kardaras, 2016). Therefore, the billion dollar investment in technology in the education sector is not worth it.
The article has several errors of reasoning. For instance, there is the use of selective observation. Kardaras observed that the concept that inner-city schools and those in rural and remote towns accepted technology in the classroom as a necessary and beneficial evolution in education was a lie. Perhaps this notion is true in that technology helps to improve knowledge retention, enhance engagement, and encourage individual learning and collaboration.
Another error of reasoning is illogical reasoning. The author assumed that technology in the classroom led to worse educational outcomes for children and also clinically hurt them. He wrongly attributed correlation for causation. Maybe the use of technology in the classroom and the cases of mental health problems in schools were purely coincidental; more so, the poor educational outcomes could be attributed to other factors.
The other error of reasoning is overgeneralization. The author presumed that the use of digital content in the classroom can lead to ADHD. There is no proof that students who use technology in class develop ADHD. The last error is resistant to change. Kardaras was quick to conclude that investing in technology in school was deceptive and hence not worth it. He is reluctant to acknowledge the important role that technology has played in the education sector.
