Statistics is the science of using math to collect and analyze numeric data, identify trends, and create evidence-based practice (Helbig & Ambrose, 2018). Statistics in healthcare is used to support empirical data to either support or disprove a hypothesis. Florence Nightingale used statistics to prove her correlation between sanitation and a decrease in mortality. Statistics is the study of how to use math to collect and analyze numerical data, spot trends, and come up with practices that are backed by evidence (Helbig & Ambrose, 2018). Statistics are used in healthcare to back up real-world data that either proves or disproves a theory. Florence Nightingale used statistics to show that sanitation and a drop in death rates were linked. By using quantifiable evidence, it was irrefutable and thus created a trend in the industry that is followed to this day.
William Augustus Guy was a doctor in the 1800s that developed statistics for forensic medicine and his theories are used to this day (Brown, 2019). His book, “Principles of Forensic Medicine”, laid the foundation of probability in modern day forensics.
