Should Police Officers be subject to random drug tests? Why or why not?
Police need to be subjected to regular and random drug test for purposes of enhancing effective law enforcement. The police need to be sober and alert in the course of their entire police work to ensure that they maintain professionalism in all aspects. The use of drug adversely affects the quality of services provided by the police in the course of their work. In this regard, the use of drugs by the police derails and affects their delivery to the point of destroying the image and reputation of police service. Equally, important, the police are involved in the consumption of different drugs such as methamphetamine, cannabis, cocaine and other steroids that hinder their effective and appropriate operations. Police need to be subjected to regular drug tests to determine and evaluate their drug consumption that affects their professionalism and delivery.
Reasons police are subjected to random drug tests
Police need to be subjected to occasional and impromptu drug tests for different reasons linked to excellences and effectiveness in their profession. First, the police and the law enforcers are tasked with the fighting of consumption of illegal drugs. In this case, the police cannot be fighting the use of productions that they are involved in its consumption (Prenzler, 397). This fact that a police officer can consume drugs introduces a hitch in the fight against the drugs. Police will take the fight against drugs lightly and with less concern thus making efforts by other laws enforcers or sectors of the criminal justice system to fail in the fight against drugs. Therefore, police cannot effectively fight and counter a product that they are already involved in its consumption.
The uses of drugs by police adversely affect their police and professional work in terms of delivery and output. Police officers that consume drug tend to operate and make decisions under the influence of the drugs they use (Prenzler, Tim and Carol, 327). Poor decision making and misjudgments among the police end up messing and affecting their work and this is a disservice to the citizens. In this case, the police can easily be taken advantage of by the criminals due to their condition such that they continually break the law in the presence of the police. Also, police can be involved in the misuse of their firearms if they use them under the influence of drugs. The police need to work and operate when sober and free from the influence of any substance to deliver in their work. Police that is found to be using drugs need to be discontinued from the service.
Finally, police need to be a good example to others in terms of respecting and observing the law and use of drugs makes them deviate from being the role model to the citizens. Police officers need to set an example to others on being law-abiding citizens to ensure that they do not get in conflict with the law (Mieczkowski, Lersch and Kruger, 137). Use of drugs by the police officers inclines them to engage in criminal activities such as smuggling of goods and people, drug businesses, theft, corrupt practices and being violent to the citizens. These acts portray the police in the bad light thus leading to conflict between the public and the police as well as damaging the image of the police. Therefore, police officers found with the vice of drug use need to be laid off.
In conclusion, police need to be randomly tested for drugs to ensure that they can uphold professionalism, ethics and morals in the course of their work. The drugs test need to be done to ascertain that they do not use drugs and thus can effectively fight drug use, offer quality and professional work and they are good examples to the society. Police offer found to be using drugs need to be counseled and rehabilitated. In the case, counseling and rehabilitation fail the police need to be continued from the service.
