Scanning activities and emerging technologies go hand-in-hand. One method of performing a scanning activity is through a SWOT analysis. In a SWOT analysis, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to an organization (as a whole) are examined. However, a SWOT analysis can also be used as a scanning activity: to identify an emerging technology and perform an examination of that technology’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

For this week’s discussion, identify an emerging technology either being implemented at another organization or currently under research and development for potential adoption at your organization of your choice. The organization can be non-profit, medical, defense-related, educational, public or private, etc. Organize your response per 1) strengths, 2) weaknesses, 3) opportunities, and 4) threats of the emerging technology.
Nanomedicine SWOT Analysis
Nanomedicine utilizes the nanotechnology aspect for diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases. It entails the study of the human molecular structure to develop devices that aid in the treatment practices. This technology repairs cells and also replaces the destroyed structures. It uses nano-tools which are smaller than a cell used in the repairing of a singular cell. The nano-robots injected in a human bloodstream can be used to either deliver a diagnosis or monitor the disease spread extent. Therapeutic nano-medicine is also used in cancer patients. It can be used to improve blood circulation, deliver drugs or even in the development of synthetic vaccines.
This technology is beneficial since it deals with the targeted cells only unlike other medical approaches. They do not contaminate or affect the healthy cells. With their ability to swim through bloodstreams or fluids it’s the best approach for drug delivery to the infected area. They help in detoxifying the blood since they can absorb toxins from the bloodstreams. It helps in the patient’s quick recovery since it repairs the damaged cells. Since they are injected in the bloodstream or a structured DNA it results in a lesser painful treatment method unlike other treatment forms. The main weakness is that since these nano-particles are artificially structured if they are not consistent they might be harmful to humans. To avoid this toxicity there is a need for more testing (Accomasso, 2018).
Nano-medicine is viewed as a technology that has the potential of almost curing cancer and prevention of transmitted diseases. It has great opportunities in the cancer institutes, and nano-medicine research areas. According to statistics due to its potential, the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan are heavily investing in this nano-technology. Lack of intensive knowledge on the drug’s effect upon release to the environment raises a greater risk (Baun, 2018).
