The history and development of security and loss prevention profession is a reflection of the dynamic nature of the industry and demonstrates how it has grown in importance since its inception. There are various significant things in the history of this profession that I emphasize. To begin with, loss prevention developed in the 1960 in response to a rise in the number of fires and explosions and an exacerbating fatal accident rate (Purpura, 2013). Understanding the origin of loss prevention is key to effectively averting losses. Secondly, it is important to note that the history of loss prevention also arose from the need to prevent losses in the insurance industry. To decrease insurance premiums, clients showed more concern regarding preventing loss thus augmenting the role of management in fire protection and safety. This information is important as it highlights the role the insurance plays in loss prevention.
Thirdly, hazard analysis or Hazan now more often known as quantitative risk assessment (QRA) was mainly used in the past to estimate the risk to life and used as a criterion (Purpura, 2013). As such, risks above a particular level were decreased as a matter of priority; those below the level were ignored. Notably, the early Hazans considered only risks to staff. This fact demonstrates how risks were categorized in the past. Fourthly, aside from Hazan, systemic methods were applied to multiple other activities, particularly the preparation of equipment for maintenance (encompassing entry to confined spaces) and the modification of processes and plants. Soon, it was established that maintenance was a major cause of severe incidents. At times, methods were poor; at times, they were satisfactory but not followed. This information highlights the origin of the risks, and as such, is important to developing loss prevention strategies. Lastly, all through history, redundant security to avert failure has been utilized to block adversaries from circumventing security defenses.
