The chosen topic is intellectual humility. This topic is important because it helps people to become both better learners and better able to take part in civil discourse. Intellectual humility enables a person to acknowledge the fact that his/her perspective is always going to be limited (Strahovnik, 2019). This acknowledgement leaves the individual well positioned to learn as much as possible from others and to endeavor to capture as much of the expertise of others as possible.

Intellectual humility entails acknowledging and owning our intellectual restrictions in as we pursue deeper understanding, knowledge and truth. As such, intellectual humility is being aware of the restrictions of one’s knowledge, encompassing an awareness of situations in which one’s native egocentrism has a likelihood of functioning in a self-deceptive way; sensitivity to prejudice, bias and restrictions of one’s point of view (Ian & Samuelson, 2016). A good example of intellectual humility is when a student is congratulated for getting an ‘A’ on a test and does not go on to mention how smart they are and how they did not have to study very much. Instead, such a person acknowledges the important role that her professor, friends/family, fellow students etc. played in helping her excel.
I can apply intellectual in my life. In particular, I will use this concept to maintain my motivation for learning. Therefore, in my learning processes, I will strive to learn from my peers about certain topics, constantly seek the guidance of my professors in various subject areas, and seek the perspectives of my mentors on certain topic. Also, whenever I succeed in various areas of my studies or profession, I will try not to brag. I will always ensure that I acknowledge the important role other people played in contributing to my successes.
