For rape of adults and minors, the goal of punishment that is usually hoped to be achieved is retribution. This form of punishment is meant to make the criminal pay for what they have done wrong (Dubber, 2014). This punishment also seeks to ensure that the severity of punishment aligns with the severity of crime. Rape is considered to be a serious crime, and for this reason, the punishment for the offenders is usually severe. As such, offenders are sent to prison for many years, and some get sentenced to life in prison. Capital punishment is also possible. Notably, castration is at times a punishment for rape and, controversially, some jurisdictions in the US permit shorter sentences for sex offenders who consent to voluntary chemical castration.
For drug possession by adults and minors, the goal of punishment is usually rehabilitation. Rehabilitation seeks to prevent future crime by changing the behavior of the defendant. Examples of rehabilitation encompass counseling, placement in a treatment center and educational and vocational programs (Dubber, 2014). The court can combine rehabilitation with imprisonment or with parole or probation. In this case, the drug offenders may be placed in treatment centers so as to change their behavior, and prevent them from reoffending.
Deterrence is the goal of punishment for college admission schemes where parents cheat to get their children admitted to certain colleges and universities. As such, deterrence seeks to discourage the offender from engaging in criminal behaviors in the future. The idea is that when punished, offenders acknowledge the unpleasant consequences of their actions themselves and will alter their behavior accordingly (Dubber, 2014). In this case, deterrence seeks to discourage the offenders from engaging in such schemes in future as well as provide a warning to the public of what awaits them should they try to engage in similar scams.
