Probation Reaction Paper
Probation is a sanction generally ordered by the court. It gives room to a person to remain in the community but under the strict supervision of a probation officer. There are conditions given to the person on probation, which vary by individual. It occurs after a youth is released from incarceration or in a residential setting. It can also occur when in place of imprisonment. There are conditions that every person on probation must adhere to (Puzzanchera & Boc, 2018). Examples are such as reporting to a probation officer or submitting to drug testing, among others. Some special conditions are given to particular cases such as participating in substance abuse treatment and community service, among others.
From the video, David Muhammad is an executive director of the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reforms. He was previously working as the chief probation officer of the Alameda County probation department, which was in California (YouTube). David also worked as the deputy commissioner in a probation department at the city of New York and as the chief of committed services of youth rehabilitation services for the department of Washington DC. By working in all these places, David has a good knowledge of what probation in the US looks like. He also answers to all the possible questions, including if the system works or not.
The three main things learned from the video include why the approach currently used in probation is broken; the things that the young generation needs to thrive and the need to involve the family is essential. The reason why the approach doesn’t seem to work or slightly broken is that it causes a lot of damage. David says that the damage caused by the justice system with probation included is significant. The second lesson is the things the young generation needs to thrive. David mentions that young people don’t need a probation officer and being searched or monitored everywhere. They need people who care about them to indulge them in meaningful activities in the community.
Third, there is a need to involve the family. David thinks that for there to be a success in probation, the family of the person concerned should be taken care of since that is where the person in punishment will return after being released from custody (YouTube). The similarity between what David says and what was discussed in class is that young people need people to take care of them in the community. According to David Muhammad, the damage caused by probation is significant. That differs from what was discussed in class. According to the reports, paroles and probation seem to be doing for good than harm.
In conclusion, the young people who are the majority in probation don’t need to be pushed around by parole officers. Within just a year, more than three hundred and eighty thousand young people are usually put on probation. It could be formally or informally. If young people are involved in different activities, they will be able to identify the various strengths and talents they have and be able to find a living through that. David Mohammed analyses the situation in a critical way looking at the problem, which is how the probation method has failed. He is also giving solutions that involve how the youths should be treated and how to handle their situation and the whole community at large.
