(rosery)The Annenberg initiative is basically a study that intends to show how media is handling inclusion in society. After reading “Inclusion or invisibility? Comprehensive Annenberg Report on diversity in entertainment” the first conclusion that I can make from the data is that there was a very noticeable lack of diversity and inclusion. The study looked at minority and gender representation from major companies like, The CW, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon and to name a few and concluded that entertainment has been dominated by straight men leaving a small percentage of blacks, women and LGBT community that appeared on screen. For example, less than 30% were women and even less than that had leading roles.
Now, how does this shape society in terms of sexuality, race and gender? In terms of sexuality the study shows a huge difference between sexy stereotypes, sexy attire, nudity among males and females, which promotes sexualization that sometimes results in body shame, appearance anxiety and self-objectification. In regards to the race, unfortunately of black representation could be really discouraging for little girls since they don’t often see black women in leading roles, bringing low self-esteem or even depression. Lastly, this lack of inclusion can also shape gender, TV usually presents “ideal” people as men being super strong or wealthy or women having a perfect body which brings self-criticism as society feels like they don’t fit in due to beauty stereotypes.
The media and television can influence people’s behavior affecting relationships in various ways, be it between celebrities and ordinary people or between celebrities themselves and their loved ones (Neale 2021). However, if a democratic society has an informed public, they can raise awareness. On the other hand, many companies and social media platforms are now showcasing more women with leading roles, including more minorities, and LGTB community members. I’m looking forward to seeing what the media will be like in the next couple of years.
