Part 1: Quantitative Methods
Consider these facts:
1 in 3 adults in the US has hypertension (NHLBI, 2011). In 2009, the rate of death from firearms was 10.2, 11.2 from motor vehicle accidents, and 13.5 from poisoning (CDC, 2011).
From 2000 to 2009, the maternal death rate and Cesarean rates correlated slightly when the Cesarean rate exceeded 15%. (Volpe, 2011).
Although these figures came from a variety of studies, analyses, and investigations, they all reflect the outcomes of quantitative research. This week you study quantitative research methods. You evaluate each design’s suitability for a given research question.
Designing Quantitative Studies
To get the finest knowledge on a topic, you need to know how to construct a query, search for resources, and evaluate the resources you uncover. You learned about the hierarchy of evidence in Week 4 of this course. A research design’s appropriateness is another technique to evaluate resources. Understanding how research designs affect study quality is critical whether performing a literature review or looking for evidence for practice.
This Discussion examines several research strategies and how they have been applied to a certain topic. You also think about how to choose a study design.
