The first thing I would need to do when using the Cognitive and Behavioral Theory (CBT) with Sam would be to learn more about Sam. I would start by asking questions such as:
-What does he think lead him to become homeless?
-Is there any medical issues that could be related to him being a veteran?
-Is he happy with his current situation?
-How does he think he could change his situation?
-How is he coping with being a veteran?
From this line of questioning, I would have a better understanding of Sam’s thought process and help me as his worker to redirect any negative thinking which could lead to him feeling more confident and willing to change his current situation. According to Langer & Lietz (2014), using positive reinforcements such as rewards, attention, or praise can lead to an increase in a particular behavior. In this case, the goal would be to offer Sam praise whenever he has a positive thought or performs a positive behavior. Another strategy that I would use on Sam would be goal setting. Some goals I would set for Sam would be to seek out medical help for any health issues he may have, find a job, and a place to stay. Lastly, I would encourage Sam to be more social in the community which can help to offer him additional support. Resources that I would use to help Sam would be reaching out to community officials and veteran associations to see if there are any resources that they could provide to him to help get him off the streets. Some assistance could include shelter and food while he is in the process of regaining control of his life.
