Cultural competence is the foundation of safe and high-quality patient care. It encompasses the capacity of healthcare providers to identify their own culture and beliefs and those of their patients and their impact on healthcare (Kaihlahen et al., 2019). Nurses’ self-awareness plays a profound role in care delivered to patients as nurses who are more self-aware and open to understanding the patient’s cultural elements and how they impact their health. The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) defines culture as the integration human behavior patterns, thoughts, communications, and beliefs. For nurses, a continual buildup of culture and respect for cultural differences coupled with patient-centered care are required to improve populations’ health.
The case study concerns TJ, a 32-year-old lesbian presenting to the clinic for her annual physical exam and vaginal discharge. She takes over the counter Tylenol for pain relief, and her pregnancy has been without major complications. Significant cultural and lifestyle factors impacting TJ’ s health belonging to the LGBTQ community, gender, sexual orientation, and being pregnant as a lesbian. Despite the advanced inequality for the LGBTQ population, pregnant lesbians face unique challenges when seeking care. Similarly, societal discrimination and judgmental attitudes also prevent members of the LGBTQ population from seeking preventive care.
As a nurse, building TJ’s health history would be based on creating a safe, non-judgmental patient environment characterized by trust. Such an environment allows the patient to freely communicate their health needs without fear of judgment.
