I live in Arizona and would like to become a Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or own homes for children with mental health illnesses in the future. Bill HB2098 is a law that lets PMHNPs do psychiatric evaluations on minors. This adds them to the list of professionals who can do this (Track Bill, 2022). So, once I became a certified PMHNP in the state of Arizona, I would be able to do inpatient and outpatient assessments of minors and suggest mental health services. This bill was just passed and signed by the governor of Arizona in April of this year (Track Bill, 2022).a
Nurses can change policies and politics all over the world (Welliver, n.d.). Nurses have a moral and professional obligation to weigh in on laws that affect their jobs and their patients (Welliver, n.d.). Nurses have an effect on politics that makes healthcare better. In the end, they speak up for their patients and their job (Welliver, n.d.). Sadly, nurses have not had enough of a say in policies and laws that affect how healthcare is given (Welliver, n.d.).
As nurses get better at their jobs, it becomes more appealing and convincing for them to stay in the field (Weberg et al., 2019). All nurses should back the following causes, which are important to me:
1. Learn about how policy changes are made and the different ways that work well at the local, state, and national levels (Weberg et al., 2019).
2. Make alliances with knowledgeable stakeholders who can help you make or change policies with evidence (Weberg et al., 2019).
3. Suggest a new policy that is very important to you, like telehealth, patient safety, or mistakes with medications. Start at the local level, such as the BON or DHS, and then move to the state level (Weberg et al., 2019).
4. Look at current policies and see how well they work (Weberg et al., 2019).
5. When possible, use evidence to make policy decisions (Weberg et al., 2019).
6. Ideas for increasing the number of nurses present at health policy debates (Weberg et al., 2019).
Also, to understand where healthcare policies come from, what they are about, and what effects they have, it is important to know that the nursing profession gives feedback to policymakers when policies don’t work or don’t have the desired results (Weberg et al., 2019). Speaking up and giving feedback are both good and skilled things to do (Weberg et al., 2019).
