Overview
Thinking about the old adage, “Never judge a book by its cover,” wouldn’t it be great to be able to see inside other people – I mean really see inside. As human beings, we keep so much of ourselves hidden, and we see only a small portion of the lives of the people we encounter. People experience things, trauma and other adverse childhood experiences, that can follow them well into adulthood. To help better understand the people we care for—what may be the driving force behind their complaints—trauma-informed care shifts the focus from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” In making this mental shift in our practice, we can potentially improve overall patient health outcomes along with providers and staff wellness.

Trauma informed care means that healthcare providers are aware that trauma happens and are able to deal with its effects using care principles that have already been set up (Dennis et al., 2022). Providers should use a health care model that takes into account both the medical and social needs of their patients to make sure they get the right care. Trauma can start in childhood and follow a person into adulthood if the problem is not dealt with well. Trauma can cause a person to have less social functioning, poor coping skills, mental illness, obesity, high blood pressure, substance abuse, and long-term health problems (Reid et al., 2022). All of these conditions can be treated or avoided if the right care and steps are taken by the provider. As an APRN, it’s important to use the nursing model of care to really focus on the patient’s needs so that they can be treated medically, fully understand their plan of care, and be able to stick with their treatment.
Giving treatment to every patient means taking care of every part of that person. Social factors that affect health shouldn’t affect treatment in a way that makes people get less care because they can’t pay for it or understand it. It is important that all patients get care that is based on their needs and centered on them. It is important to educate providers and nurses while they are in school so that they can use what they have learned to improve their work. Research by Pfeiffer and Grabbe (2022) shows that more research is needed to find better ways to change the way people think about the role trauma plays in underlying health problems so that people can understand how important it is. It’s not as old as some other things in education and nursing curriculums.
As future providers, it is our job to change the way we give care so that all patients get the care they need and deserve. This will make sure that healthcare is good and effective.
