The second part of the reflection paper will outline the student’s most important reactions and ideas relative to the research literature read in preparation for the research seminar session in the upcoming residency. A very brief/concise but thoughtful analysis of the readings will be due. The assignment for this part of the paper is to analyze, integrate and/or draw creative connections from the readings that lead logically to an idea for future research. These are not article outlines or summaries. The papers involve your critical, analytical and creative commentary that draw on the readings at some level, as well as your practical reflections on the workshop, and offers ideas for extension, additional research, or critique of the research in the areas involved. The topics addressed in this class within both the practical workshop and the research seminars are closely related through a common theme and so lend themselves well to drawing some connections between your own developmental insights and research and theory that together can lead to your thoughts or ideas about how to possibly extend research or thinking in this area. Examples of questions that may guide your thinking and writing about the readings are: What are the theoretical connections between the articles you read and how might additional research extend these areas? What commonalities and differences exist between your practical experience and the research you read, and what needs to be done next as a creative extension of thinking and understanding? These are examples of the types of issues to be addressed in your thought papers. You may choose to answer somewhat different questions. Ideas for additional research or theory building are what are needed in these assignments that build upon your reflection on the practical experience. Obviously, the intent is to develop a cohesive, focused idea that you can write about concisely. In short, you should ideally understand what the readings offer in light of your practical experience and the “workshop” we conduct together, and have ideas about how to improve on the literature via your paper. This is intended to be a thought exercise that is concisely and succinctly communicated in writing, but you should come prepared to elaborate on your ideas in the seminar when we all engage in discussion.
