Telehealth is the use of electronic information and telecommunication technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, health administration, and public health. (HRSA, 2022)
Telehealth can be used for a wide range of things anywhere in the world where people have access to technology. Telehealth could help countries and areas that don’t have a lot of medical knowledge or resources get care. In Bungoma County, Kenya, where Gitaka et al. (2018) did a study, telehealth is helping to lower the number of babies who die before their first birthday. It is thought that 31% of babies born in County are born alive. The goal of this study was to use telehealth to help cut the death rate for newborns by 30%. Telehealth in this area and other places with limited health care could help make health care the same all over the world, so that people can get good care no matter where they live. This idea is very different from what is done now and would require a lot of resources, including ways to communicate. Many countries don’t have electricity to plug in your phone or tablet, which is a big problem for getting telehealth anywhere in the world. Global telehealth is also limited by the fact that there aren’t enough doctors and nurses who are trained and equipped to give more intensive care. Telehealth could change the way healthcare is done around the world if it had a lot of resources and support.
On the other hand, Telehealth not only makes the healthcare system better, but it also connects global health networks, which can help with humanitarian crises, monitoring and surveillance of emergencies, generating health data, and informing international aid programs and policies. With telehealth, people all over the world will be able to get healthcare. So, you could get in touch with your doctor, but not for everything. Some of the problems with telehealth are that it can’t be used to do full physical exams, there could be technical problems, security breaches, and regulatory barriers. Some people who don’t like telehealth worry that it could hurt continuity of care. They say that online interactions are impersonal and dangerous because the virtual provider doesn’t have a full history or physical exam to help with diagnosis and treatment. Even though auscultation or palpation often require face-to-face meetings, telehealth should be thought of as a supplement and is best used to add to in-person visits (Gajarawala and Pelkowski, 2022).
Telehealth is a tool that helps us get to our patients more easily. Nothing we do in health care is foolproof or perfect, so we have to change and adapt based on the patients we see. Telehealth is no different. It has its own problems that will need to be solved, but it is a useful way to give patients more access to care. The biggest problem with telehealth is that it has to follow rules and regulations. There are also many legal and regulatory problems with telehealth, such as the fact that there are many different rules, regulations, and guidelines for practice (Gajarawala and Pelkowski, 2022). Every insurance plan has its own idea of what it covers, and telehealth is one of those things.
