3D Printing Homes
3D technology has immense potential to transform many aspects of our lives and especially in the construction industry. Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis attempted to come up with the first 3D printed building in 2004, and since then, this innovation exploded. Today it has become possible to build any house within 20 hours (Jamie, 2019). Professor Behrokh was able to come up with an FDM 3D printer that is mounted on robotic arms extruding concrete layers in place of plastics this creating a 3D model (Jamie, 2019). Park and Jeon (2015) argue that due to the efficiency and effectiveness of this technology, today, construction giants have quickly realized the huge potential that lies in 3D printed buildings. This factor explains why more architecture has adopted this technique.
One example where this technology has been used recently is where Icon, a construction technology company, has teamed up with the Housing non-profit New Story to develop The Vulcan (Mashable Deals, 2018). This building happens to be the first home to apply this technology in Austin, Texas and forms the benchmark that will be used to build similar homes in the area. The success of this building is a demonstration of the effectiveness of this technology to build efficient modern homes for the future within a very short time.
Another example where this technology has been applied to build 3D homes is in piazza Cesare Beccaria in Milan. This building covers a total area of about 1,076 square feet, with its printing process lasting about 48 hours split out within a week (CNN Business, 2018). The most important thing about this construction is that the technology allows for the recycling of the raw materials used once the life cycle of the building is over (CNN Business, 2018). As such, 3D printing technology promises to be an effective tool for future construction that minimizes wastage while ensuring construction is done within a very short time.
Although this technology is still at its infancy stage, more companies are begging to come up with new and innovative projects leveraging on 3D printing construction technology. Given the efficiency and the numerous benefits it offers its users, the technology is likely to overcome its current limitations.
